If you live in Ontario, you’re really lucky. Why? Because you have a toolkit called the Environment Bill of Rights, that lets you have a say in government decisions that affect the environment.

One tool lets you comment before the government makes a decision.

Another tool lets you ask the government to change or create environmental laws or policies.

And, if you think someone is breaking an environmental law, there’s also a tool that lets you ask the government to investigate.

The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario is the champion of these environmental rights, reporting each year on environmental issues in Ontario, and how people use the tools in the toolkit to better protect Ontario’s environment.

In Ontario, we’re lucky to have thousands of lakes and rivers.

They give us: water to drink; places to swim, fish and play; flowing water to produce electricity; water for farms and businesses; and habitats for plants, fish and other animals.

It’s the Ontario government’s job to safeguard these things, by: limiting pollution; ensuring tap water is safe to drink; restricting how much water can be taken; deciding where and how dams can operate; working with governments to protect the Great Lakes; and monitoring and researching Ontario’s waters.

This is a big responsibility. Want to know how the government is doing at keeping Ontario’s waters safe for drinking, swimming and fishing?

The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario reports on these things and more. Read our annual reports, available at eco.on.ca.

Each year, the Ontario government makes decisions that affect our environment – the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we depend on for food, resources and fun, and the plants and animals that live there.

These decisions affect you. You drink water, right? Enjoy time outdoors? Eat food from Ontario’s farms?

Lucky for you, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario reports on the government’s decisions that affect your environment – and much more – each year.

Find out what happened this year. Read our reports online at eco.on.ca.
